Main Duties of Placement

Morning ward rounds, and jobs arising from these. Assessment of patients in surgical pre-assessment clinic. Clerking emergency admissions to wards. Medical care of patients on wards, including those in neuro HDU.

Typical Work Pattern

Ward cover hours 8am-5pm. Weekends and evenings covering both neurosurgery and neurology. Night shifts as part of H@N covering the above wards, plus infectious diseases.

Learning Opportunities

Plenty of opportunity to clerk patients and improve neuro history/exam skills. Opportunities to acquire practical skills such as lumbar puncture and tapping of shunt access devices. Opportunities to go to theatre. Daily neuroradiology meeting.

Teaching

Weekly FY2 hospital teaching, plus ward-based teaching from one of the consultants.

Unique Selling Points

Experience looking after patients on neuro HDU. Variety of pathology. Close involvement with anaesthetics and neuroradiology teams.
