Main Duties of Placement

First on call for adult and paediatric ENT. In SJH, a normal day starts with a ward round followed by assessment of ward attenders. In Lauriston Buildings, mornings are the SHO emergency clinic and afternoons are new appointment ENT clinics. At Sick Children’s the duties are varied and include clinic (observing), theatre assisting and seeing patients in A and E.

Nights and weekends are at SJH and cross cover plastics.

Typical Work Pattern

12 hour on call patterns separated by clinic/RHSC days (8 hours).

Learning Opportunities

Plenty; always registrars and consultants nearby.

Weekly departmental teaching on Friday afternoon.


Departmental internal teaching programme 1 hour per week.

Hospital FY2 teaching programme 1 hour per week.

Unique Selling Points

Unique surgical subspeciality whereby the practical skills of management of epistaxis, quinsy and flexible nasendoscopy are obtained. Opportunities to observe/assist in interesting surgeries as well as run an emergency clinic.
