Main duties of placement:

The post in general surgery offers excellent experience in the care of elective and emergency surgical patients. The Gilbert Bain Hospital is a Rural General Hospital that deals with unselected emergency presentations.

The elective workload involves a broad spectrum of general surgery.

There is exposure to critically ill patients in the high dependency unit.

Main duties include ward care pre- & post-operative, emergency patient care, attending MDT, morbidity & mortality meetings and student supervision.

Typical work pattern:

40 hour week (full shift)

08.00 to 17.00 (4 days per week)

08.00 to 12.00 (1 day per week)

No out of hours work or overnight cover

Unique selling points:

The Gilbert Bain is the most remote of the Rural General Hospitals in Scotland, but enjoys good support from consultants in Grampian. This has allowed the locally based general surgeons to maintain a very broad-based general surgical practice. This consists of upper and lower GI surgery, breast surgery, urology, orthopaedic trauma, and all surgical conditions presenting to the Emergency Department, including ENT and eye emergencies.
