Main duties of placement:
  • Holistic care of inpatients
  • Key team member on daily ward rounds 
  • Supervision of FY1s
  • Assessing new patients and initiating treatment
  • Reviewing ill patients
  • Discussing patients with other specialities
  • Discharge planning
  • Ward based procedures
  • Running Ambulatory Emergency Clinic on a rotational basis with the ANPs and CTs.
  • Attend and assist in theatre. 
Typical work pattern:
  • Predominantly 8-5 rota with some long day shifts (08:00-20:30hrs) and day shift weekend work.
  • Nights not anticipated.
  • Mixture of elective ward cover, emergency ward cover and running ambulatory emergency clinic.
Learning opportunities:
  • Ward-based/ward round teaching.
  • Theatre sessions.
  • Outpatient clinic experience.
  • Running of our ambulatory emergency clinic - increased independence of assessing and managing this subset of patients.
  • Approachable staff throughout the department at all levels.
  • Monthly audit meetings.
  • Weekly surgical outcomes meeting.
Teaching:
  • Departmental lunchtime teaching.

  • Wide variety of cases across receiving and the spectrum of general surgery including upper GI, lower GI and Urology cases as well as seeing emergencies admitted via A&E.
