| Main duties of placement: | Predominantly a ward-based doctor for neurosurgery patients (and all neurosciences patients when OOH), some work in surgical pre-assessment clinic. Opportunities for involvement theatre, MDTs, and clinics when the wards are covered and safe. |
| Typical work pattern: | Full shift. DCN-based nights and OOH shifts. |
| Learning opportunities: | A unique role for an FY2; be they a wannabe GP, physician, neurologist, radiologist, surgeon, or neurosurgeon. You will be exposed to the full range of neuropathology in a tertiary unit covering SE Scotland. You will hone your neurological examination and history-taking skills and gain experience in managing acutely unwell patients. |
| Teaching: | Neurosurgery-centric teaching from consultants and trainees, alongside timetabled FY2 teaching. Friday afternoon academic meetings including monthly M+M |
| Unique selling points: | Excellent registrar-level support, very involved consultants. DCN strives for top-end care. You will be valued highly and supported. One ex-SHO found their time in DCN so affecting and compelling that it made it into their (best-selling) book: Adventures in Human Being, Gavin Francis. Worth a read. Academically a very productive unit so good opportunities for research, audit and quality improvement. |
