Main duties of placement:
  • Updating ward patient list.
  • Attending 8am and 4pm registrar-led ward rounds.
  • Discharge letters as unit is part of the acute surgical receiving unit so a high turnover of patients.
  • Responsible for organsing investigations and following up results.
  • Management of acutely unwell patients.
  • Admission of elective patients.
  • Practical procedures e.g., IV cannulation, NG tubes.
Typical work pattern:

In every three weeks:

  • 8am-5pm shifts.
  • Two on-call weekends in 4 month block.
  • 1-2 7 nights sets of night shifts.
  • 1-2 weeks covering the acute surgical receiving ward.
Learning opportunities:
  • Informal registrar ward teaching.
  • Opportunities to gain experience in practical procedures.
Teaching:
  • FY1 teaching as per delivered education programme.
Unique selling points:
  • Broad based experience of a variety of surgical presentations/conditions.
  • Good experience with reasonable working hours and friendly staff.
  • Plenty of teaching at trauma meetings and some theatre time.
