Main duties of placement:

Morning daily review of all patients before anaesthetist ward round. Present all patients on the ward round. Consultant surgeon ward rounds. Daily microbiology meeting to discuss all relevant patients. Day to day care of all patients on the unit. Ensuring timely and appropriate responses to abnormal physiology.

Typical work pattern:

0800 - 1500 2 days a week, 0800 - 1900 2 days a week and then 0800 - 1700 every Friday. A few weeks on call covering acute surgical admissions ward and the assessment bay or nights covering surgical HDU and the surgical floor.

Learning opportunities:

Daily teaching ward rounds with a consultant anaesthetist.

Opportunities to learn practical procedures e.g. how to insert central and arterial lines.

Teaching:
  • FY1 teaching as per delivered education programme.
  • Daily teaching ward rounds.
Unique selling points:

Work directly with surgical and anaesthetic consultants daily to review patients.

A very supportive and encouraging learning environment. Every ward round is used as a teaching opportunity. No question is too small.

Opportunities to learn how to insert central lines and arterial lines which I think is unique to this placement.
