Main duties of placement:
  • Ward rounds 3 x per week with consultants, generally talk about patients first and then go round and see them.
  • Keeping discharges up to date.
  • Organising OP and IP appointments.
  • General ward tasks.
  • Ordering bloods.
  • Keeping TPARs and notes up to date.
  • MDT meetings once a week.
  • As part of a team of F1/2s, STs, Nurse Practitioners, Allied Health Professionals and Acute Medical Consultants, responsible for the initial assessment and management of a range of acutely unwell medical patients; responsible for delivering continuing care for patients within the Acute Medical Unit.
Typical work pattern:
  • Working pattern is 0900-1830 Mon to Fri.
  • Cross cover some wards due to staffing.
Learning opportunities:
  • MDT meetings every week.
  • Journal club/case presentations Friday.
  • Presentations on Tuesday.
  • Opportunities to develop clinical and non-technical skills: through direct supervision and real-time feedback from Registrars/Consultants; daily “10-minute tutorials” (commended by NES); a weekly lunchtime teaching programme; bed-side clinical skills teaching; mastery of practical procedures via simulation and supervised practice; in-situ scenario simulation; and multidisciplinary Values-Based Reflective Practice sessions (in addition to programmed Foundation School teaching sessions).

  • Block release for teaching in Ninewells.
