Main duties of placement:

Gynae: Admit patients for elective surgery, go on post-surgical ward round and do jobs following this, assess and admit emergency referrals and assist in gynae theatre.

Obstetrics: Assess pregnant patients who have been triaged by midwives, carry out ward duties in post-natal care ward and labour suite and assist with C-sections in theatre.

Although not scheduled in the time-table there are frequent opportunities to sit in outpatient gynae and obstetric clinics.

Typical work pattern:

Usually you work 8.45 - 16.45 Monday to Friday, but you also have to do 2 weeks of night shifts, several weekend shifts and work infrequent long day shifts e.g. about one every 2 weeks.

Learning opportunities:

O+G trainees teach FYs quite a lot informally on a day to day basis.

Teaching:

Every Friday afternoon there is a departmental teaching session for all FYs and O+G trainees. It lasts roughly 2 hours and covers topics relevant to clinical practice in the speciality. Whole day teaching sessions are also sometimes organised by the department.

Unique selling points:

Opportunities to learn new skills e.g. speculum examination, assisting in surgical procedures. Weekly bleep-free teaching sessions.
