Main duties of placement:
  • Ward rounds.
  • Clerk in jobs.
  • On-call duties in the evening/weekends/nights.
  • As part of a team of F1/2s, STs, Nurse Practitioners, Allied Health Professionals and Acute Medical Consultants, responsible for the initial assessment and management of a range of acutely unwell medical patients; responsible for delivering continuing care for patients within the Acute Medical Unit.
Typical work pattern:
  • Weekday shifts on Ward 3.
  • On-call shifts in evenings/weekends/nights.
  • Acute Medical Admissions Unit shifts.
Learning opportunities:
  • Ward-based teaching.
  • Weekly patient presentations.
  • Opportunities to develop clinical and non-technical skills: through direct supervision and real-time feedback from Registrars/Consultants; daily “10-minute tutorials” (commended by NES); a weekly lunchtime teaching programme; bed-side clinical skills teaching; mastery of practical procedures via simulation and supervised practice; in-situ scenario simulation; and multidisciplinary Values-Based Reflective Practice sessions (in addition to programmed Foundation School teaching sessions).
Teaching:
  • FY1 teaching as per delivered education programme.
  • Weekly patient presentations.
