Placement Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery
Year F1
Region East
Hospital(s) Ninewells Hospital, Dundee
Main Duties of Placement
  • Ward duties (bloods, trauma admission clerking, ward rounds, post op reviews, prescribing, managing unwell patients with support)
  • Duties across 3 wards (Ward 17 Admissions, Ward 18 Adult Trauma, Ward 19 Hip Fracture Ward – with resident Medicine for Elderly team)
  • Work as part of team with ANPs/FY2s/Registrars/Consultants
  • Resident Medicine for Elderly Team and Acute Medicine middle grade support in-hours
  • Night duties – undertaken in Ninewells
Typical Work Pattern

Standard days, long days, weekend long days.

“Back up and breaks shift” to cover colleagues’ breaks.

Part of rota including Perth Royal Infirmary weeks. Night duties at Ninewells. 

Learning Opportunities
  • Daily Trauma Meetings 0800
  • Departmental FY Orthopaedic Teaching program
  • Daily ortho Fracture clinics and Trauma theatres with Consultant presence until late evening
  • Consultant Teaching on ward rounds, clinics and theatre
  • Attend regional PG Teaching
  • Bedside teaching from Ortho/MFE doctors and Acute Medicine Middle Grade
Teaching
  • Regular Centralised Orthopaedic Departmental Teaching
  • Attend Daily Trauma meetings whilst in Ninewells
  • Postgraduate Deanery Teaching with cross cover
