Placement Renal Medicine

Main Duties of Placement

This post rotates through Acute Internal Medicine (2 months) and Renal Medicine (2 months)

The AIM duties include making initial assessments of adults admitted as an acute medical emergency , supporting Consultant Ward rounds, presenting cases at the 3 daily board rounds, attending adults who are acutely deteriorating following admission, helping to formulate and deliver management plans, facilitating safe discharge of patients. Daily work  is supported by a team of Consultants, middle grade staff and an ANP.

The renal placement is supported by daily Consultant or middle grade ward rounds. Duties include completing ward round tasks, keeping families up to date, supporting safe discharge of adults, attending MDTs and attending adults who are acutely deteriorating following admission.

Typical Work Pattern

Acute Internal Medicine: shift work including day shift, afternoon/evening shift, nights and weekends

Renal Medicine: Day shifts, weekend cover and occasional evening cover

Unique Selling Points

The balance of this post provides an opportunity to develop acute skills as well as experience in the management of patients with more complex clinical conditions requiring longer stays in hospital. Raigmore covers a wide geographical area and, as such, we see a wide range of pathologies whilst facing unique clinical challenges in terms of service delivery. 

The renal attachment gives you experience in managing adults with Acute Kidney Injury along with dealing with adults on dialysis, and those with kidney transplants who are inpatients. 

It is also an excellent base for those who enjoy the outdoor lifestyle with many activities such as hiking, climbing and skiing, all on your doorstep.
