Individual Placement Description
Placement General (Internal) Medicine
Year F2
Region North
Hospital(s) Balfour Hospital
Main Duties of Placement

This General (Internal) Medicine post is based on the Inpatients 1 (IP1) ward at the Balfour Hospital, Orkney.

You will work under the supervision of a General Medicine Consultant to provide inpatient care to acute medical admissions.

This will involve participating in a daily ward round, and the ongoing investigation and care of medical patients on the ward.

There is a daily weekday MDT on the ward at 1330 that is an opportunity to discuss our patients with our nursing and AHP colleagues.

Medical admissions occur in our Emergency Department (ED), and you will have an opportunity to assess these acute attendances, under senior supervision, in your rota.

The post involves work in the evening and weekends, but no nights.

Typical Work Pattern

Your rota will average 40 hours a week, with out-of-hours work in the evenings and weekends.

Learning Opportunities

This post will include the learning opportunities typically available on any Acute or General Medicine ward, with the addition of patients with all medical specialty conditions (we only have one acute ward). Patients are managed with the remote assistance of the specialties in NHS Grampian, and you will have the opportunity to discuss patients with them.

The rota will in include time in ED, so there will also be the opportunity to assess acute attendances.

Teaching

Your Educational and Clinical Supervisor will be a NHS Orkney Medical Consultant. The other Medical Consultants will also support your learning with supervision, feedback and assistance with workplace based assessments.

Our ED specialty doctor will provide supervision and feedback during your time in the ED department.

You will be able to attend NHS Orkney’s weekly Clinical Education Meeting, and also NHS Education for Scotland’s Rural General Hospitals Grand Round (Teams).

Foundation teaching is organised by the ‘North region’ team, these are twice monthly 2 hour sessions, trainees in Orkney will attend via MS Teams

Unique Selling Points

This post offers experience of practice in a Rural and Remote setting, with our unique challenge of providing best care to patients who don’t have immediate access to the range of specialists and facilities typical at a larger District General or Teaching Hospital.

All acute medical admission are cared for on our IP1 ward or HDU, so you gain experience managing patients with all types of medical conditions, including those often looked after in specialist units such as Stroke Unit or CCU.

You will be part of a relatively small medical team, whom you will get to know well, this is an opportunity to hone your team working skills.

It is important to note that this description is a typical example of your placement and may be subject to change.
