Individual Placement Description | |
---|---|
Placement | Haematology, Acute Internal Medicine and Clinical Oncology |
Year | F2 |
Region | North |
Hospital(s) | Raigmore Hospital, Inverness |
Main Duties of Placement | The FY2s are responsible for covering the 16 beds on Ward 2c. The Department of Oncology consists of 4 consultants and in addition Associate Specialists. The Department of Haematology consists of 3 consultants and an Associate Specialist. The majority of patients are admitted electively for planned chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Whilst there are some acute admissions the majority of acute cases are admitted through the medical receiving ward, however by virtue of their disease and the treatment received, the patients will exhibit a large range of clinical signs and symptoms and the FY2s will gain great experience in managing medical emergencies. There are 2 FY2 doctors covering the ward and they work collaboratively to cover both haematology and oncology patients. There is support and close working with nursing staff, the Macmillan Palliative Care team, physiotherapy, pharmacy and dietetics. The vast majority of the FY2s work is ward-based however there are opportunities to attend outpatient clinics. |
Typical Work Pattern | The rota for FY2s is integrated into the Hospital at Night rota after 9pm. From 5pm to 9pm there is cross-cover with ENT, Ophthalmology and Dermatology. There is a mix of standard day shifts, long day shifts and overnight shifts (as part of Hospital at Night). |
Learning Opportunities | Weekly tutorials are held which cover a number of aspects of patient care (e.g. management of neutropenic sepsis, DIC etc.) as well as laboratory data interpretation. |
Teaching | 1 day a month FY2 teaching. This takes the form of curriculum-based teaching followed by facilitated small group case based discussions. |
Unique Selling Points | This post whilst very busy is regarded by FY2 doctors as one of the most enjoyable and satisfying in the hospital. Raigmore is a Cancer Centre and as such the vast majority of malignant disorders are dealt with locally. |
It is important to note that this description is a typical example of your placement and may be subject to change. |
