Main duties of placement:
  • Holistic care of inpatients
  • Key team member on daily ward rounds 
  • Assessing new patients and initiating treatment
  • Reviewing ill patients
  • Discussing patients with other specialities
  • Discharge planning
  • Ward based procedures
  • Opportunities to go to Ambulatory Emergency Clinic and Theatre 
Typical work pattern:

Based on surgical receiving (approx. two months) and a surgical specialty base ward which may include Otolaryngology (ENT) (approx. two months).

Learning opportunities:

Ward-based/ward round teachin.

Theatre sessions.

Approachable staff throughout the department at all levels.

Weekly meeting with FY1 presentation which is educational.

Occasional audit meetings which can be attended.

A lot of ward based learning/teaching.

Chance to do a lot of procedures.

Teaching:

One hour of FY1 mandatory teaching weekly.

Unique selling points:

Approachable staff, friendly department, significant 1 on 1 consultant time. Wide variety of cases across receiving and the spectrum of upper GI, lower GI, Vascular and Urology as well as seeing emergencies admitted via A&E such as head injuries. Good opportunity to practice a range of essential generic FY1 skills and theatre time.
