Main duties of placement:

Within the Department of Cardiology FY1 trainees will be exposed to training and service opportunities which will be of value in their acquisition of clinical competence.

Typical work pattern:

You will attend daily ward rounds in CCU (plus triage/attendance at emergencies/arrests) or cardiology ward, independently or with registrar/consultant. You will participate in the normal day-to-day ward work, including clerking patients.

Learning opportunities:

There will be Participation in outpatient clinics once per week, and in the operating theatre roughly twice per week. There are weekly joint meetings between cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons.

Teaching:

There is a weekly journal club.

On-call for CCU/cardiology and sometimes renal medicine on a shift basis.

Weekly angioplasty/EP meeting.

The routine work gives daily exposure to chest X-Ray and CT scan interpretation, as well as daily management of chest drains.
