| Main duties of placement: | 'Specimens' are received from theatres/clinics ranging from small i.e. skin lesion to larger ones i.e. colons. The specimen needs to be described macroscopically and if anything unusual or areas of inflammation etc. these need to be sampled so that the area of interest is captured down the microscope. It goes through a process resulting in the tissue on a glass slide ready to look at down the microscope. When not 'cutting' you check slides microscopically and report findings. |
| Typical work pattern: | The current rota is split up into weeks in different areas, being routine histology, cytology, post mortem and paediatric pathology weeks. |
| Learning opportunities: | Cytology - analyse cells down the microscope and report it. Post mortem week - there are hospital PM and forensic PM. Paediatric week - similar to routine but the specimens are from children. |
| Teaching: | Monthly 2x2hr sessions for FY2 trainees. |
