Region: |
North |
Hospital(s): |
Gilbert Bain Hospital, Lerwick |
Main duties of placement: | You will be part of the surgical team which has 3 consultants, 1 staff grade surgeon, 2 GP trainees and you. You will be working on the surgical ward, in the emergency admission department, in the surgical outpatient clinic and in theatre. |
Typical work pattern: | There is a timetable with weekly allocations to allow all junior doctors to get exposure to all aspects of the remote and rural surgical experience, i.e. allocations to outpatient clinics, ward work, A & E, theatre sessions etc. The out-of-hours work is an on-call rota. The rota is carefully worked out to comply with the EWTD and to ensure that there is always a junior doctor available in the hospital. During nights on-call, you will cross cover for medical patients. |
Learning opportunities: | A formalised morning meeting of the department allows feedback and planning. There are regular daily ward rounds. Journal club sessions are integral to the formal teaching sessions. We have a regular review sessions with a visiting orthopaedic surgeon. |
Teaching: | Video links for regional teaching sessions are provided. There is a regular surgical teaching session once a week. You are encouraged to attend all other teaching opportunities at our hospital, especially governance meetings. The staff grade surgeon gives regular informal teaching sessions. |
Unique selling points: | You are working directly with the consultants. You can be involved in practical surgical work. The work is very varied with a broad range of learning opportunities. Shetland is (nearly) a world apart and a wonderful place to explore! |
