Placement Rheumatology
Year F1

Main Duties of Placement
  • Elective and emergency patient admissions.
  • Biologics infusions.
  • Attend out-patient clinics at Woolmanhill, specialised clinics (CTD, Bone, Ankylosing Spondylitis clinics during your placement).

 

Typical Work Pattern
  • Working hours 09.00- 18.00. You also cover AMAU at weekends (1 in 4)
  • Out-of-hours care is provided by the on-call team of the East Block (up to SpR's level). Hand-over on Friday evenings (+/- weekdays if required).
Learning Opportunities
  • Attend as many outpatient clinics (Woolmanhill) as possible.
  • Attend all specialty clinics at least once: Connective Tissues Diseases, Bone and Ankylosing spondylitis.
  • Wednesday morning injection clinics is a must. This is a great opportunity to learn how to aspirate/inject joints and soft tissue lesions.
  • You should also try to attend a DEXA scan session to familiarize with the procedure.
Teaching
  • Rheumatology MDT meetings.
  • X-ray meeting.
  • Postgraduate teaching sessions on Wednesday afternoons: Hospital (Grand Round) 1-2PM.
  • Rheumatology postgraduate seminars are held at the Suttie building between 2-3 pm.
  • Friday afternoon teaching - held in Tutorial room, Infection Unit. Rheumatology staff have to do a presentation every 4 weeks.
  • Pathology, audit and research meetings - once every 6 months.

Deanery-held teaching 5hrs per month.
