Main Duties of Placement

The Gilbert Bain Hospital is a rural general hospital, serving a population of 22,000. The FY2 is one of five juniors covering a variety of jobs on a rotational basis. The post rotates between A and E, ward cover, Care of the Elderly ward cover, clinics and Hospital at Night. 

Typical Work Pattern

The rota is working time compliant and partial shift. The design of the rota allows the trainee to have a wide range of exposure to different clinical area such as A and E and clinics as well as ward cover.

Learning Opportunities

There is a weekly teaching programme. Once per month there is an opportunity to link into the Royal College of Edinburgh evening teach in sessions. There is a monthly education meeting held with primary and secondary care. There are two formal teaching ward rounds held each week.

Teaching

Video conferencing for deanery teaching is provided.

Other in-house teaching opportunities include resuscitation training.

There is an opportunity to attend monthly teaching governance sessions as well as attend business-based ward governance meetings. This allows the trainee an insight into the issues of managing a ward.

Unique Selling Points

Truly general job where the trainee can be involved with the patient’s care from emergency admission right through to in patient care and follow up at outpatients. Very close working with consultants.
