Placement Oncology
Year F2

Main Duties of Placement

The Department of Oncology consists of 5 consultants and 2 Salaried GPs. The Department of Haematology consists of 4 consultants.

The FY2s are responsible for covering the 19 oncology/haematology beds.

There are 2 FY2 doctors covering the ward and they work collaboratively to cover both haematology and oncology patients.

FY2s undertake daily self-directed and consultant-led ward rounds.

Attending consultant-led multidisciplinary ward rounds.

Assessing patients admitted electively for investigations, chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

Assessing patients admitted as an emergency with cancer-related complications, presenting with a large range of clinical signs and symptoms.

Typical Work Pattern

0900-1700 covering oncology ward.

2 months 1700-2100 covering general medicine.

1 weekend per month 0900-1600 covering oncology/haematology/ENT/ophthalmology.

Weekly haematology tutorials.

1 full day per month at hospital.

Unique Selling Points

The oncology/haematology FY2 post allows the unique opportunity to manage patients admitted under the care of the oncology and haematology teams, who present with a wide range of symptoms and signs, with the support of senior clinicians. FY2s will gain valuable experience in managing medical emergencies. There is support and close working with senior clinicians, ward nursing staff, specialist MacMillan nurses, Palliative Care team, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, pharmacists and dieticians.
