Individual Placement Description
Placement General Psychiatry
Year F2
Region South-East
Hospital(s) Borders General Hospital, Melrose
Main Duties of Placement
  • Undertaking holistic psychiatric assessments using the medical diagnostic and psychiatric biopsychosocial framework and recommending initial management plans for acute adult psychiatric inpatients on Huntlyburn ward, using relevant admission and other documentation
  • As part of the above, ensuring physical evaluation including  examination and ordering/interpretation of relevant investigations
  • Contributing to risk assessments and associated documentation
  • Medication reconciliation and prescribing (under guidance of the senior medical team); keeping kardexes up to date
  • Provision of responsive medical input to the acute adult inpatient unit as part of a wider multidisciplinary team; assessing emerging mental and physical health needs as they arise
  • Undertaking immediate and summary discharge documentation 
  • Undertaking case summaries
  • Contribute to collateral history-taking from and communication with relatives and carers
  • Attending ward rounds: documenting key discussion points, clinical findings and management plans; contributing own findings to support war rounds
  • Liaising with members of the community teams, other medical speciality areas and wider clinical/other colleagues as needed to inform, plan and implement clinical care plans
  • Participation in audit
  • Participation in first on-call rota 
Typical Work Pattern

Work Pattern - all on Huntlyburn site

  • Medical ward huddle on a Monday morning; local education session and journal club meetings on Monday afternoon
  • 3 weekly consultant ward rounds (usually Tuesdays and Thursdays)
  • Ward duties in between ward rounds
  • Weekly supervision with middle grade/senior doctor
  • Further CPD/audit time once per week 
Learning Opportunities
  • Weekly education session and journal club meetings 1:30pm – 3:30pm term time on Mondays 
  • Weekly 1 hour supervision with middle grade/senior doctor
  • 3 weekly ward rounds with senior doctor
  • Weekly huddle overseen by experienced middle grade doctor
  • Both ward-based and wider service audits
  • Pharmacist input to support
  • Ward-based education sessions add further opportunity for receiving and delivering teaching
