Main duties of placement: | Inpatient care:
Outpatient (programmed investigation unit):
Many patients attend PIU for lumbar punctures - this is the responsibility of the FY1/FY2 in the first instance. |
Typical work pattern: | As FY1, 8:00-16:00, with occasional evenings in ARAU, and every 3rd/4th weekend in ARU. No Neurology out of hours work. |
Learning opportunities: | Lots of teaching:
"Book round" once a week, led by consultant on call for the benefit of more junior members of team - informal, excellent learning opportunity. |
Teaching: | FY1 teaching 1 hour weekly- all FY1s in hospital attend. Specialty-based teaching as above. |
Unique selling points: | Well supported, with friendly registrars and consultants who encourage participation in team. Everyone becomes skilled at lumbar puncture. Exposure to rare/unusual presentations of disease - very interesting. Many opportunities to attend clinics. |
