Main duties of placement:

Consultant-led ward rounds, clerking and initial assessment of patients admitted as acute surgical admissions/ortho trauma.

Peri-operative patient care on wards.

Management peri-operative patients on call in conjunction with HAN.

Typical work pattern:

Full shift rota on a 19 week cycle.

Shifts include acute surgical receiving, HAN, and time with one of our elective teams in General Surgery, Orthopaedics, Urology or ENT, allowing a broad surgical experience.

Learning opportunities:

Ward-based learning.

MDT and other speciality-specific meetings.

General Surgery teaching programme with planned FY1 involvement.

Ortho Trauma meetings.

Teaching:

Mandatory protected teaching time for:

  • NHS Fife Medical Education Services FY1 Core Education Programme delivering 1 hour per week.
  • NHS Fife Medical Education Services FY1 Core Simulation Programme delivering 3 sessions per block.

Department teaching:

  • General Surgery teaching programme with timetabled FY1 involvement.
  • Ward-based teaching Orthopaedics/Gen Surgery by specialist trainees/ consultants.
  • Weekly grand rounds for whole acute division.
