Main duties of placement:

Assessment and treatment of old age psychiatry inpatients, attending ward rounds, family meetings and discharge planning meeting.

Day to day physical health care of patients and completion of discharge letters

Working with other junior medical team (GPST, CT & ST) and MDT colleagues to provide individualised person centred holistic bio psycho social care.

Typical work pattern:

Monday-Friday 9am-5pm plus long days (to 9pm) and blocks of night and weekend duties. All on call work is within psychiatric services.

Learning opportunities:

Regular opportunities for ward-based teaching and to attend team learning sessions.

Option to attend weekly case conferences, special lectures every two weeks.

Weekly supervision

Teaching:

Weekly Foundation Teaching Programme in Psychiatry, Balint Group and drop in sessions which take place at the REH.

Monthly regional FY2 teaching programmewhich takes place at the Western General Hospital

Unique selling points:

One-to-one working with a consultant in comprehensive old age psychiatry inpatient service with well established multidisciplinary team working. Experience of interface between physical and mental health needs of older people with all mental health problems including dementia. Exposure to working with vulnerable adults including legal and ethical aspects of care.  Great opportunities to develop communication skills working with disadvantaged patient group.
