Main duties of placement:

The placement includes 4 x one week blocks of CCU with remaining time on the cardiology ward (103). 

Routine inpatient care including ward rounds on Ward 103, consultant led rounds twice daily in CCU.   

There is also opportunity to attend cardiology clinics for outpatient review, or sit in with registrar / consultant. 

Typical work pattern:

The job consists of week-long blocks on either 103 or CCU with weekend cover for both units.

CCU involves working 12 hour days.

There are no late shifts or long days on ward 103.

The F2 also participates in the Hospital at Night rota. 

Learning opportunities:

Cardiothoracic multi-disciplinary team meeting on Friday lunchtimes – review of angiography, echo, CT, MRI etc.

Monthly morbidity and mortality meetings.

Opportunities for practical procedures eg DCCV. 

Teaching:

Hospital F2 teaching programme 1 hour per week (Thursday). 

Unique selling points:

The time spent on CCU and in clinic.  

Familiarity with managing acute cardiac conditions. ECG interpretation. 

Observation / exposure to cardiac procedures e.g. angioplasty, TAVI, pacemaker implant, central line placement.
