Main duties of placement:

First assessment of front door patients.

Treatment of minor and major injury/illness and resus.

Arranging and interpreting emergency investigations e.g. CT scanning.

Transfer/referral to speciality or discharge +/- arranged follow up.

Patient information i.e. setting criteria for prompt return to A+E.

Practical procedures e.g. suturing.

Entire time in A&E department.

Typical work pattern:

Full shifts in A&E with approximately equal thirds days, evenings and nights.

High proportion of weekends.

Learning opportunities:

Senior on hand to discuss any interesting/difficult cases.

Exposure to broad variety of presentations.

Teaching:

Daily departmental teaching.

Weekly protected Emergency Department Teaching.

Weekly FY2 teaching.

Monthly M&M.

Radiology meetings available.

Consultants on hand at all times.

Able to increase speed and efficiency of assessment and fully manage own patients in supported environment. Cross specialty and varied case exposure.
