Main duties of placement:

Gynae Ward: Pre- and post-op patients, emergency admissions.

Labour Ward: Assisting with C-sections/forceps.

Antenatal/Postnatal: Mainly discharge scripts.

Day Bed/Early Pregnancy Unit: Reviewing preg probs (miscarriage, ectopic, pre-eclampsia etc.)

Assistant in Gynae Theatre.

OPD clinics.

Typical work pattern:

Day Shift: 0830-1630

Late Shift: 1230-2030 (1 week in 6)

Long Days (Fri/Sat/Sun): 0830-2030 (1 in 6)

Nights (Fri/Sat/Sun/Mon): 2030-0830 (1 in 6)

Learning opportunities:

Regular opportunities for ward-based teaching with registrars. Departmental Meeting one lunchtime/week. Daily labour ward meetings to review previous day's deliveries.

Teaching:

Departmental internal junior doctor teaching programme 1 hour per week.

Hospital FY2 teaching programme 1 hour per week.

Unique selling points:

Lots of scheduled theatre time/main assistant in C-sections on labour ward. Good place to get hands on experience in O+G particularly if you let the consultants know you're interested.
