Main duties of placement:

This is a different FY1 post to those on medical/surgical wards.

The emphasis is on learning and development. By always working directly with seniors there are regular opportunities for teaching and development of clinical skills and new procedures. 

Typical work pattern:

Ward Standard Day – 0900-1700

Ward Long Day – 0900-2130

Cancer Assessment Unit (CAU) Day – 0845-1730

CAU Late – 1400-2200

Weekend Long Day – 0900-2130

CAU Weekend – 1000-1800

Weekday Nights – 2100-0930

Weekend Nights – 2100-0900

Nightshift cross cover with Haematology

Learning opportunities:

Formal teaching (weekly FY2 teaching and weekly Oncology ward doctor teaching) and opportunistic learning on the wards.

Attendance at outpatient clinics and radiotherapy planning suite is programmed into the rota

Teaching:

Hospital FY2 teaching 1 hour per week.

Oncology ward doctor teaching 1 hour per week.

Unique selling points:

Opportunity to interact with and observe patients receiving systemic anti-cancer therapy and radiotherapy.

Given responsibility for reviewing inpatients with good support from registrars and consultants.

Opportunities for clinical audits.

Strong links with the Hospital Palliative Care Team allowing development of palliative care knowledge and skills.
