Borders General Hospital - General (Internal) Medicine (2024)

Individual placement description

Placement:

General Internal Medicine

Year:

F1

Region:

South East

Hospital(s):

Borders General Hospital, Melrose

Main duties of placement:

Consultant-led ward rounds.

SPR ward rounds.

FY1 review when neither SPR or consultant are doing a round (SPR or consultants are almost always contactable if there is a problem).

7 nights with Hospital at Night.

Typical work pattern:

Ward Days: 9am-5pm.

On call admissions (Ward 4): 9am-9pm (but best to get there at 8:45am to deliver the imaging and consultation requests before HAN handover/traffic lights at 9am).

7 nights with Hospital at Night.

Learning opportunities:

FY1 tutorials every Thursday.

Medical grand rounds at Tuesday lunchtime.

Medical X-ray meeting Friday lunchtime.

Teaching:

Mandatory FY1 tutorials every Thursday.

Unique selling points:

Working directly with consultants, working in a team with the other FY1s and reviewing patients alone rather than sitting in a room doing paperwork and d/c summaries with no patient contact.

Getting to know everyone in the hospital very quickly so it's a very friendly and non-intimidating place to work. You get more responsibility than other hospitals but more support from seniors when you need it.

Very warm welcome to the incoming FY1s; curry night with programme director and Borders Bash.

It is important to note that this description is a typical example of your placement and may be subject to change.
