Main duties of placement:

Consultant-led ward rounds every morning. 

Day to day running of surgical ward and dealing with deteriorating and acutely unwell patients under senior supervision 

Discharge and admission of patients 

Pre-assessment clinic. 

Two weekend shifts. 

Seven days with Hospital at Night.

Typical work pattern:

On call: 8am-4:30pm. 

On call late: 2pm-10pm. 

Ward: 8am-6:30pm. 

Pre-assessment clinic (includes jobs on ward in between patients): 8am-4:30pm. 

7 nights with Hospital at Night. 

Learning opportunities:

FY1 tutorials every Thursday. Surgery grand ward round on Wednesday morning. Medical grand rounds at Tuesday lunchtime. Medical X-ray meeting Friday lunchtime. Voluntary participating in theatre sessions gaining practical surgical skills. Regular lectures by senior members of surgical teams.  

Teaching:

Mandatory FY1 tutorials every Thursday.

Unique selling points:

Working directly with consultants, working in a team with the other FY1s. In absence of formal medical referral, FY1s have quite a big role in looking after non-surgical patient issues so goodexperience.
