Main duties of placement:

Twice daily ward rounds.

Ward-based jobs.

Opportunity to help in theatre.

Clerking new elective admissions.

Experience of working in both cardiac and thoracic surgery.

Typical work pattern:

Three shift patterns:

  • Mon – Fri: 7.45-16.00
  • Mon – Sun: 9.00-21.00 Mon/Tues, 13.00-21.00 Wed/Thur/Fri, 8.30-21.00 Sat/Sun
  • Wed – Fri: 10.00-18.00
Learning opportunities:

Weekly FY teaching and case presentations.

Opportunity to attend theatre and outpatient clinics.

Opportunity to improve interpretation of radiological imaging.

Experience in managing post-operative cardiac patients.

Department M&M meetings.

Teaching:

Weekly generic hospital FY1 teaching.

Weekly department FY teaching.

Unique selling points:

Opportunity to improve on radiology interpretation. Opportunity to attend theatre if interested in surgery. Working as part of a small team in a highly specialised area. Opportunity to develop practical procedures such as chest drain insertion and understand cardiac surgery and managing patients in the immediate post-operative period.

Work as a part of a multiprofessional team including FY2 doctors, and ANPs.
