Main duties of placement:

The day starts with handover from Hospital at Night then daily MDT to discuss all patients.

There are 2 teams: Liver (red) and luminal (blue).

On both teams the F1 and F2/IMT doctor will do some independent ward rounds (usually 1-2 per week).

The remainder of ward rounds will be performed with a registrar/consultant.

There is daily and regular registrar and consultant presence on the ward.

Typical work pattern:

The shifts include 4-5 long days (09.00-21.00) followed by a weekend off then up to 7 days of daily shifts made up of a mix of long and short (08.30 to either 17.00 or 21.00) followed by up to 3 days of compensatory rest.

There is no HAN contribution in this post.

Learning opportunities:

Ward-based teaching including opportunities for mini-CEX and Case Based Discussions.

GI radiology meeting (Wednesday).

Journal club (Thursday).

Teaching:

Hospital F1 teaching programme 1 hour per week (Tuesday).

Unique selling points:

Highlights include opportunities to undertake ascitic taps and paracentesis on a regular basis, management of acutely ill/GI bleed patients and nutritional assessments within MDT discussions.
