Main duties of placement:

Inpatient care:

  • Ward rounds with consultant/registrar, ensuring all patients reviewed every day.
  • Ward jobs e.g. clerking, investigations, discharges etc.

Outpatient (programmed investigation unit):

  • Prescribing treatments for day patients (it is a nurse-led system otherwise).

Many patients attend PIU for lumbar punctures - this is the responsibility of the FY1/FY2 in the first instance.
Typical work pattern:

As FY1, 8:00-16:00, with occasional evenings in ARAU, and every 3rd/4th weekend in ARU. No Neurology out of hours work.
Learning opportunities:

Lots of teaching:

  • Daily Neuroradiology meeting. 
  • Academic afternoon weekly with real patient cases and guest speaker - all from department present.
  • Journal club weekly.

"Book round" once a week, led by consultant on call for the benefit of more junior members of team - informal, excellent learning opportunity.
Teaching:

FY1 teaching 1 hour weekly- all FY1s in hospital attend. Specialty-based teaching as above. 
Unique selling points:

Well supported, with friendly registrars and consultants who encourage participation in team.

Everyone becomes skilled at lumbar puncture.

Exposure to rare/unusual presentations of disease - very interesting.

Many opportunities to attend clinics.
