Main duties of placement:

Anaesthetics: pre-assess patients, cannulate patients pre-op, draw up IV drugs, manage the airway (under consultant supervision), monitor during surgery (under consultant supervision) 

ICU: review patients before the ward round, present them on the ward round, complete ward jobs.

Typical work pattern:

Weekly working pattern is Monday – Friday 08.00-17.00, including 08.00-20.30 one day a week and one day off. You will be required to work weekends.

Learning opportunities:

Anaesthetics: Daily teaching with the consultant.

ICU: Regular opportunities for ward-based teaching. 

Teaching:

Mandatory protected teaching time for:

  • NHS Fife Medical Education Services FY1 Core Education Programme delivering 1 hour per week.
  • NHS Fife Medical Education Services FY1 Core Simulation Programme delivering 3 sessions per block.

Department teaching:

  • Departmental internal teaching programme 1 hour per week.
Unique selling points:

Great clinical skills unique to anaesthetics/ICU e.g. spinals, airway management etc.
