Main duties of placement:

Palliative care ward rounds & jobs. 

Options to join palliative care outreach reviews & to shadow community nursing team.

General medical on call – nights (hospital @ night), evening ward/on call cover & weekend ward/on call cover.

Typical work pattern:

9:00 - 17:00 within palliative care team, late shifts 17:00 -21:30 ward cover in General Medicine.

Hospital at Night (H@N) 21:00-9:30 Mon-Thur or Fri-Sun.

Weekend long days 9:00-21:30 covering General Medicine or on Take.

Week covering General Medical Take days (9:00-21:30) alternating with Post Take days (8:30-16:30)

Week of back shifts 13:30-21:30 – on Take

Learning opportunities:

Ward MDT, consultant ward round.

Observe procedures, honing communication skills esp. difficult conversations.

Gain confidence in recognising dying & anticipatory prescribing/symptom control.

Build General Medical experience with ST & consultant support through Take and H@N.

Teaching:

F2 mandatory teaching programme (1hr per week in person) & simulation.

Regular departmental teaching, both formal and informal.

‘Lunch & learn’ departmental meetings twice monthly.

Weekly Grand Round.
