Main duties of placement:

Daily ward rounds on the Children's Ward and Special Care Baby Unit.

Assessment, diagnosis and management of GP and A+E paediatric referrals.

On-call bleep holder taking referrals/advice calls from GPs/A+E/Community Midwives/Health Visitors etc.

New-born baby examination and review in post-natal ward.

Review of patients in the Planned Investigation Unit.

Paediatric phlebotomy, cannulation.

Assisting with paediatric/neonatal resuscitation.

Typical work pattern:

Day shift 8am-4pm.

Late shift 12-8pm.

Night shift 8pm-8am.

Weekend shift 8am-8pm.

Learning opportunities:

Ward-based teaching during ward rounds and review of patients in the assessment bay, often directly from the consultant.

Weekly paediatric teaching on the ward; led by FY1 up to consultant level.

Attendance at out-patient clinics in General and Specialty Paediatrics.

Medical student attachments provide opportunities for teaching.

Teaching:

FY2 teaching one hour once per week (mandatory).

Paediatric teaching once per week.

This is job is a great opportunity to gain experience in Paediatrics in a well-supported environment with exposure to a variety of medical paediatric presentations, as well as preterm and neonatal clinical presentations in SCBU.

The job allows for a multidisciplinary team approach to patient care, liaising directly with consultants, advanced neonatal and paediatric nurse practitioners, experienced paediatric nurses and midwives.
