Placement Plastic Surgery
Year F1
Region South-East

Main Duties of Placement

Duties:

Peri-operative management of elective and emergency plastic surgery patients.

Ward round in morning with up to date knowledge of relevant history, investigation results and ongoing patient issues.

Typical ward duties:

  • Complete tasks assigned on ward rounds including discharges, clerk ins, patient reviews, venflons and bloods etc.
  • Doing the same for Oral-Maxillo Facial Surgery and ENT patients and medical boarders as required. 

In addition you can be called to the surgical pre-assessment clinic to provide medical input as required.

Theatre and clinic sessions available when work is complete on the ward.

Rotational attachment to the on-call Core trainee.

During late shift you also cover ward 14 (ortho rehab).

Typical Work Pattern

Full shifts daily; either day shift 0800-1700, or late shift 1330-2100. Night shifts are part of H@N. Weekend shifts every 4 weeks.

Learning Opportunities

General patient management skills. FY1 plastic teaching most weeks (1 hour). Plastics unit teaching Friday afternoon with opportunity to present work (3 hours).

Good opportunity for trauma assessment of emergency patients with CT on call when available.

Teaching

As above plus mandatory FY1 teaching by SJH Wednesday lunchtime. 

Unique Selling Points

Surgical speciality interest of plastic surgery, learning to assess trauma wounds in emergency admissions under guidance of seniors. Exposure to basic surgical skills in theatre.
