Placement General (Internal) Medicine/Rheumatology/Dermatology
Year F2
Region South-East
Hospital(s) Western General Hospital, Edinburgh
Main Duties of Placement

Rheumatology and Dermatology no longer have a separate ward and patients are admitted in the medical wards under these specialities.

The FY2 is now based on ward 26/27 @WGH. Essentially the post is in Rheumatology/Dermatology.

FY2 will cover both Rheumatology and Dermatology inpatients: Monday/Friday 0800-1600 with the odd longer day where you spend the evening in MAU.

You will also be involved in helping out with the medical patients on the ward. Rheumatology is a very outpatient based specialty and the best learning opportunities are here. You will be assigned to a rheumatology clinic once a week (Thursday morning @WGH) and will work closely with the consultant and registrar in these clinics.

You will also get to shadow the rheumatology registrar and participate in the acute rheumatology clinic rota ( under supervision), attend injection clinics and academic meetings. Dermatology out patients is based in Lauriston Building in the centre of town.

If you are interested in Dermatology clinics please liaise with the Dermatology team for clinic attendance. MAU emergency (Medical Assessment Area): Mixed shift pattern including one set of long weekend days and on average 2 sets of weekend nights (may be in MAUE or may be as part of the hospital H@N team) seeing and assessing patients sent up to WGH to acute medicine. Supported by registrar and consultant. Ward 26/27 (General Medicine ward - normal patient footprint 20 patients, going up to nearer 60 out of hours): 0900-1700 doing ward rounds (often with a consultant) and ward jobs. Intermittent ward ‘late shifts’ 1230- 2130, helping out in the afternoon then covering the ‘medical floor’ from 1700-2130 (with an F1 until 1900).
