Placement General Adult Psychiatry
Year F2
Region South-East
Hospital(s) St Johns Hospital, Livingston
Main Duties of Placement

Ward duties coupled with clinic duties twice weekly and on-call commitments once weekly.

Assisting with ECT on a rotational basis.

In addition juniors will be expected to complete the relevant dictation from on-call shifts and twice weekly outpatient clinics.

Typical Work Pattern

Regular day 9am-5pm.

Late shift 9am-9pm.

Two 1/3 weekends per rotation.

Approximately 10 late shifts per rotation.

Two sets of weekend and weekday nights as part of the medical HAN team.

Juniors will also be expected to provide on-call/ward cover to facilitate annual leave.

Learning Opportunities

Once weekly opportunities to discuss any concerns with allocated supervisor.

Once weekly group session to highlight and discuss any areas of difficulty arising on a week-to-week basis.

Teaching

Hospital FY1 teaching programme 1 hour per week.

Structured lunchtime meetings once weekly on a Tuesday with opportunity for junior presentations.

Unique Selling Points

Opportunity to work independently and develop lone-worker skills whilst being supported by a team of experienced psychiatric staff members.

Opportunity to develop skills required to carry out an effective outpatient clinic and decide the appropriate FU and management plans resulting from these clinics.

Opportunity to see a wide range of psychiatric presentations regardless of base-ward as on-call shifts encompass CAMHs, General Adult psychiatry, Old Age psychiatry, IPCU and the REDU.
