Main Duties of Placement

FY2 is based on the Medicine of the Elderly wards (MoE) which look after a mixture of acute and rehabilitating patients.

Some FY2s may rotate through the Acute Stroke Unit as well as the acute frailty unit. assessing and managing patients presenting acutely.

The FY2 is a core member of the clinical team providing assessment and management of elderly patients, and ‘all age’ stroke patients, admitted directly from the Medical Admissions Unit and other hospitals and departments.

FY2 participates in regular Consultant ward rounds, daily board rounds and weekly multidisciplinary team meetings (MDTMs). Evening and weekend shifts are as part of an evening on-call team and are based within the MoE unit providing ward cover.

Some shifts may be based at the front door assessing acute all age patients.

Typical Work Pattern

Basic day shift is 0900-1700, evening shifts are 1630-2115, long day and weekend shifts are 0845-2115 and night shifts are 2100-0930 (as part of the Hospital at Night Team).

All are full shift pattern.

Learning Opportunities

Regular Consultant ward rounds provide good ward-based teaching as do the weekly MDTMs.

Comprehensive educational programme (see below).

FY2 participates in audit/QI.

Teaching

Hospital-based teaching includes weekly Grand Rounds and weekly FY2 teaching programme.

Unit MoE teaching includes weekly radiology meeting, weekly multidisciplinary teaching and weekly junior doctor tutorial programme.

The unit has a regular Morbidity and Mortality meeting and QI meeting which the FY2 attends.

There are many teaching opportunities with a large number of medical students rotating through the department.
