Placement Obstetrics and Gynaecology
Year F2
Region South-East
Hospital(s) Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh
Main Duties of Placement

Immediate assessment of patients in unscheduled care (obsteric and gynae triage departments).

Labour ward long shifts (ward round, assisting with C-sections/instrumental deliveries, ward jobs).

Ward trainee on antenatal/postnatal/gynae wards. 

Outpatient clinics including antenatal, gynae, reproductive endocrinology, (optional) TOP.

Typical Work Pattern

Labour ward/nights/weekends 12.5 hour shift.

Triage 10.30-18.30 (approximately twice a week).

Clinic/ward 8.30-16.30.

Set of nights at SJH 1-2 times during a 4 month placement.

Learning Opportunities

Well supervised with good senior support.

Good learning opportunities in clinic and ward settings.

Teaching

Weekly departmental SHO teaching.

Weekly hospital FY2 teaching.

Frequent departmental meetings (e.g. perinatal morbidity, CTG meetings etc.)

Unique Selling Points

Large and busy department. Steep learning curve! Good for those with an interest in O&G, GP, hospital/emergency medicine.
