Placement Old Age Psychiatry

Main Duties of Placement

Your main role is the assessment and management of mental illness, and potential comorbid physical illness in older adults.  You will be primarily based in Ward 1 & 4 of Queen Margaret Hospital.  You will be expected to attend ward rounds and MDT meetings.  You will also have outpatient clinics and community work.   You will be part of the duty doctor rota covering the hospital site.

You will be part of the Fife-wide out of hours rota, which is based at UCAT in Kirkcaldy. This involves assessment and management of patients presenting with psychiatric emergencies, generally in working age adults, and often involves admission to psychiatric inpatient care and the use of the Mental Health Act.

Typical Work Pattern

Monday-Friday 9am-5pm (at your base)

OOH entails a hybrid shift system, comprising long working days, weekends, nightshifts and 24-hour ‘second on call’, with commensurate rest periods.

Learning Opportunities

The assessment and management of patients with a wide variety of mental disorders, throughout their journey of care and recovery.

Developing understanding in the use MHA and AWI.

Regular opportunities for ward-based teaching

Opportunities to become involved in medical student teaching.

Opportunities to undertake clinical audit / quality improvement work.

Arrangements can be made for interested trainees to spend time with different parts of the service, to increase exposure and awareness of psychiatric subspecialties.

Teaching

Mandatory protected teaching time for:

  • NHS Fife Medical Education Services FY2 Core Education Programme delivering 1 hour per week.
  • NHS Fife Medical Education Services FY2 Core Simulation Programme delivering 3 sessions per block.

Department teaching:

  • Individual supervision with consultant (1hr/wk)
  • Postgraduate Psychiatry teaching programme and Journal Club (2hr/wk)
