Main duties of placement:
  • Ward rounds and ward work.
  • Assessment of new admissions. 
  • Well supported by Consultants on the floor from 9 am to 8pm plus advanced nurse practitioners team.
Typical work pattern:

Four months spent in acute medical ward with exposure to gen med & receiving. Seven nights spent on H@N cover. Full shifts until 9.30pm with handover at 9pm.  Weekend daytime cover 3 times in 4 month block.

Learning opportunities:

Informal ward-based teaching including teaching of skills and procedures. Monthly Morbidity and Mortality plus hospital M&M less frequently. Weekly Wednesday medical unit educational meeting. Weekly MDT meetings for some sub-specialties. Thursday Core trainee-led F1 case-based teaching every second week. Friday lunchtime journal club/trainee forum.

Teaching:
  • Mandatory FY1 teaching programme covering the foundation programme syllabus.
  • There are hospital postgraduate meetings at least monthly. 
  • Bi-monthly Thursday CMT-led F1 teaching.
Unique selling points:

Well supported by consultants and senior trainees. Excellent opportunity to gain experience in initial assessment and management of acutely sick patients.  Opportunity to perform procedures supervised by senior trainee.
