Main duties of placement: | Ward-based clinical cover including elective and emergency admissions, ward rounds & dealing with acutely unwell patients. Outpatient pre-admission assessment reviews for elective admissions. GP calls when first on for surgical receiving. |
Typical work pattern: | In 4 month block, rotation through acute surgical receiving, general and elective wards. 2 weeks of first on (9-930) for surgical receiving, A&E (dealing with acute surgical admissions) and GP calls. 2 weeks of second on (8-8pm) for ward cover. Cross cover for orthopaedics out of hours. 7 nights for H@N. 5 weekends in 4 months (including nights). |
Learning opportunities: |

Teaching: | Mandatory FY1 teaching programme covering the foundation programme syllabus. Bi-monthly Thursday CMT-led F1 teaching. There are hospital postgraduate meetings at least monthly. Friday surgical teaching. |
Unique selling points: | Busy district general hospital with colorectal, upper GI, breast and urology subspecialties. Ward-based but rotate around, so a wide range of sub-specialties encountered. |
