Main duties of placement:

Care of a wide range of medical conditions within an HDU setting. Treatment of medical emergencies including acute coronary syndromes, gastro-intestinal bleeding, acute renal failure and diabetic ketoacidosis.

Typical work pattern:
  • On-call as part of General Medicine team.
  • One late working until 21:30hrs per week and weekends worked 1 in 4.
  • No night working.
  • Holidays are pre-allocated.
Learning opportunities:

There are daily consultant ward rounds. There is exposure to insertion of central and arterial lines and the use of non-invasive ventilation.

Grand Rounds on Fridays.

Teaching:

Mandatory curriculum teaching is on a Wednesday lunctime. This is protected time.

Increase confidence in the management of acutely ill medical patients.
