Main duties of placement:

Ward management of patients admitted to acute psychiatric care.

Acute assessments of urgent referrals with the Intensive Home Treatment Team.

Typical work pattern:

Full shift, currently 1 in 8.6.

All assessments are fed back to the senior on call (usually consultant).

Learning opportunities:

Ward-based teaching.

Internal teaching at Dykebar (every 2 weeks in term time).

Journal club (every 2 weeks in term time).

Balint group for trainees (weekly; Balint is a psychotherapy informed group to allow discussion of challenging cases and experiences).

Teaching:

Internal teaching as above.

External teaching programme for trainees (alternates with internal teaching weeks in term).

Unique selling points:

Varied and interesting post allowing an excellent introduction to psychiatry.

Well supported by senior staff, including an hour a week protected time for supervision with educational supervisor.

Trainee will work directly with the consultant on the ward.

Additional experiences are readily available e.g. observing outpatient clinics, attendance at the community mental health and home treatment teams, attendance at Mental Health Tribunals.

Audit actively encouraged and supported.
