Main duties of placement:

Pre-consultant review of patients, ward rounds attendance, arranging and reviewing investigations.

As FY2- As above + Pre-admission assessment of patients in outreach areas under consultant supervision
Typical work pattern:

Combination of short days (08:30 - 21:00) and small contribution to night rota.  Approximate weekend frequency 1 in 3.  Approx 3 sets of 4 night in a 4 month rotation.  Consultant and more senior trainee present on site at all times.

  • Management of acutely ill patients including those on life support
  • Procedural experience and sign off (almost all the foundation curriculum requirements tend to get signed off in ICU)
  • Management of post-operative patients during ITU recovery
  • Management of enteral and parenteral nutrition
  • Airway management
  • Multiorgan physiology
  • End of life care discussions with families
  • Elective attachments in operating theatre
Teaching:

Weekly consultant led teaching

Opportunity for presentations at the unit meetings with feedback

Participation in Morbidity and Mortality meetings.
Unique selling points:

The ICU placement has consistently gained positive trainee feedback. The trainees have felt that the consultant supervision, direct and indirect teaching they receive and in particular procedural experience they gain are the best bits of their ICU time. The foundation trainees get direct senior and consultant support in all their clinical work.
