Main duties of placement:

Combination of:

  • ward work and rounds
  • community work
  • outpatient clinics (2-3 times a week)
  • weekly MDT
  • on calls (covering multiple sites)
Typical work pattern:
  • 2 sessions of nights per block (Mon-Thu and Fri-Sun).
  • Long days (9am to 9.30pm) for 1 in 4 weekends and do long day around once a fortnight.
  • About five days of on-calls at Monklands (9 to 5 shifts only) per block.
  • You also get two days off for every weekend you work.
Learning opportunities:
  • Regular supervision by consultants.
  • Journal club and MDT once a week.
Teaching:
  • Formal teaching sessions once or twice a week, usually on a Thursday morning and other day.
  • NHSL FY2 teaching sessions (2 half days per block)
Unique selling points:
  • You have to cover five different sites during your on-calls so you get to see a wide range of psychiatric conditions.
  • Lots of learning opportunities and enough free time to prepare for exams.
  • You also get the Monday and Tuesday off if you work a weekend, so FY2s feel the hours are very fair.
