Main duties of placement:

Microbiology phone advice, interpreting microbiology lab results, informing ward staff of positive cultures. Responsible for the same work as a microbiology registrar but under close supervision.

Typical work pattern:

9-5 Monday to Friday, periods of on-calls which varied between 12-hour day shifts and 12 hour nightshifts mostly based in the receiving department. Due to splitting of the on-call rota, ~70% of time was spend in microbiology and 30% on-call.

Learning opportunities:

Encouraged to learn about bacteria and antibiotics from books, lots of opportunities to discuss cases with senior staff members.

Teaching:

Opportunity to present cases and audits, one chance to teach medical students.
